Within the Angeles National Forest lies the Eaton Canyon where residents and visitors in South Pasadena enjoy hiking trails, a biking trail, and equestrian trails. The canyon was once known as El Precipicio and was named after Judge Benjamin S. Eaton who lived in the Fair Oaks Ranch House in the 19th century.

The Mount Wilson Toll Road trail in the canyon, which was once used as a roadway to travel up Mount Wilson, is open to bicycles. There is also an observatory on the trail. Other trails in the canyon to check out include Bridge, Henninger Flats, Coyote Canyon, Walnut Canyon, and Moist Canyon. Streams like those in the Eaton Wash run through the canyon. Eaton Wash flows into the Los Angeles River and the Rio Hondo River.

Be sure to stop by the Eaton Canyon Nature Center within the Eaton Canyon Natural Area Park. The park is made up of 190 acres within the canyon that was once used as homesteading land, and is open between sunrise and sunset every day of the week. The center offers resources on the park as well as educational exhibits. The current building was opened in the late 1990s after the damage caused by the Altadena fire of the early 1990s. Today, the center offers an information desk, an auditorium, classrooms, a gift shop and more.

Check the center for programming like the guided walks and special events. In the park, you’ll be able to find the Fire Canyon Ecology Trail and the Mount Wilson Toll Road trailhead. Take a picnic and enjoy the scenery where you, friends, and/or family may learn about the geology, history, and ecology of the park.

If you are looking for more areas to discover in the canyon, put the Eaton Canyon Falls on your list. This fifty-foot waterfall exists in front of a tunnel that once ran through to the other falls in the area. The trails in this area have been closed since then. If organized activities interest you more, check out the Eaton Canyon Golf Course. The 9-hole golf course was built in 1962 and created by William Francis Bell.
