According to the Association of Children’s Museums, “children learn through exploration and play.” Both of these are offered in multiple forms at the Kidspace Children’s Museum. It opened in 1979 at the California  Institute of Technology. The museum relocated to Pasadena in 1981 and moved to the Brookside Park location in 2002. Since 2004, in Arroyo Seco, the museum runs out of the historic Fannie Morrison Horticultural Center. As of 2009, more than one million visitors have been admitted to the museum.

The Physics Forest Exhibit opened at the museum in Pasadena, featuring 12 interactive exhibits like the Bottle Rocket, the Wheel Roll, and the Giant Lever. There are 8 more exhibits in the Arroyo Adventure in the Kidspace Gardens, which opened in 2016. The Storyteller Studio recently opened in the Roberts Pavilion. The creative space — where children play dress up, practice with puppets, act out stories, and create art — is designed for three to six-year-olds, but it is open to other ages as well.

The Early Childhood Learning Center is a space for children ages three and under to explore and learn with their parents. These younger children will encounter different textures and spaces to learn about in the Shiny Stream, Twisty Tunnels, Tinker Tables, Shapes and Shadows mobile, and Nuzzle Nests. Private nursing areas for mothers are available in designated spaces in the museum.

Children ages four and up can use tools to build and learn about technology in the Imagination Center. In Arroyo Adventure, The Hawk’s Nest involves a fun climb; the Flood & Erosion exhibit allows children to play with sand to learn about water flow; and the Infant & Toddler Area offers sand, quiet time, and a seating area. In the Harvest Corner, children learn about food, agriculture, health, and the plant life cycle. Tricycles are available for riding with helmets on the Trike Tracks, music events take place regularly, and children in The Dig practice early introductions to paleontology.
