A new audio tour guides patrons through the history of the museum. The Los Angeles Police Museum is the oldest police station built in the city of Los Angeles. It was once known as the Highland Park Police Station (built in the 1920s), and the station closed in the 1980s. Names of donors are featured on the museum’s Memorial Brick Wall. In January of 1984, the Highland Park Police Station was named a Historic Cultural Monument of the city.

Visitors have the opportunity to meet police dogs like Nellie on the bomb squad (see http://laphs.org/), learn about how police dealt with the case of the Hillside Stranglers, and how the station was almost bombed in the 1970s. The Los Angeles Police Station has been featured in major motion pictures as well as in television shows shot in Los Angeles. It was filmed for the setting of the Pawnee Police Station on the popular comedy show Parks and Recreation (starring Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, and Chris Pratt). A fascinating history surrounds the police station, including the story of Police Chief Daryl Gates, who was arrested at the Highland Park Police Station as a young man before his future as a police captain.
